Are AI chats private?
AI chats are not automatically private. The answer depends on which service and mode you use, who processes the prompt, and what is retained afterwards. Encryption, guest access, local history, and training controls each address different parts of that question.

Follow the information through the whole request
Start with your device: saved chats, files, screenshots, and exports may persist there. Next consider the application server, the model provider, and any connected search or other tools. Each can have different data-handling rules.
A browser-local chat history does not make a hosted model run locally. The prompt and relevant context still need to reach the model for it to answer. Conversely, using a remote model does not necessarily mean the product keeps a permanent history.
Ask about storage and training separately
Check whether the service keeps conversation content, for how long, and under what exceptions. Then check whether it uses that content for training. A no-training commitment is not the same as a promise to retain nothing.
Settings can differ between consumer, business, API, guest, and temporary modes. Read the documentation for the exact product and mode rather than generalizing from the company name.
Check controls before sharing sensitive material
Remove details the task does not need. Check files and screenshots for identifying information as well as the prompt. Consider whether you have permission to share other people’s material.
Read the current privacy policy and test the controls you can observe: export, deletion, memory, and history. A missing chat in another browser does not prove a server never received or retained it.
