Where Lumo is the better choice
Lumo’s privacy rests on more than a contract. Proton runs the models on servers it controls, encrypts each prompt so that only its model servers can decrypt it, and stores signed-in history with zero-access encryption that Proton says it cannot read. It says it keeps no metadata such as timestamps or IP addresses, operates under European law, and publishes Lumo’s code so its claims can be checked. nokeep sends requests to hosted providers under zero-retention agreements and is not open source.
If you want encrypted history that follows you across devices, files linked from Proton Drive, project spaces, web search and memory, Lumo offers them inside a Proton account. nokeep has no sync: its history stays in one browser.
Where nokeep differs
nokeep never asks for an account, even to pay: a claim key stands in for one, and the card form asks for no name or address. Free use covers 25 messages and 2 images a day, and edits count toward the images. One 5-second clip at 768p is free each day while the shared free supply lasts, and characters you create stay in your browser for an ongoing story.
Chat has no refusal layer of ours on top of the models, though a model can still decline and illegal content is always blocked.
Encrypted sync or browser-only storage?
These are two answers to the same worry. Zero-access encryption keeps a server copy that only your account can unlock, so history survives a lost device. Browser-only storage keeps no server copy at all, so there is nothing to sync and nothing to recover: clearing browser data erases the history, and anyone with your unlocked browser can read it.
Neither runs the model on your device. A hosted model has to read your prompt to answer it, so leave out details the task does not need, whichever you choose.

Can I use Lumo without an account?
Yes, as a guest with limited access. Guest conversations are erased at the end of each session; saved history needs a free Proton account.
Does Lumo make images?
Yes. Since Lumo 2.0 in June 2026 it can generate, edit and analyze images, with a limited number of generations on the free plan.
Is encrypted history less private than browser storage?
There is no universal ranking. Encryption design, device security, recovery needs and how the model provider handles prompts all matter.
Do I need an account for nokeep?
No. The free tier needs no email, password or card. Paid access uses a claim key, and payment processing is covered in the privacy policy.
