Training

Does AI train on my conversations?

By default, usually yes — most consumer AI assistants reserve the right to use your conversations to improve their models, and the opt-out is a setting you have to find rather than the way the product ships.

The three postures

Trains by default, opt-out available. The most common consumer arrangement. Your conversations feed model improvement until you change a setting, and anything sent before you changed it was already used.

Does not train, but retains. Better, and still means the text exists on a server, attached to your account, for as long as their policy says — available to be subpoenaed, breached or repurposed under a future policy.

Does not retain. The prompt is processed and dropped. There is nothing to train on later because there is nothing left, which is the only version of "we don't train on your data" that does not depend on continued good behaviour.

Why "we don't train on your data" is a weaker promise than it sounds

It is a promise about intent, and intent is revisable. Policies change, companies are acquired, and terms are updated with an email nobody reads. A promise not to *use* data you are still holding is only as durable as your current management.

No-retention is a promise about physics instead. If the text is gone, no future policy change can reach it. That is why nokeep is built around retention rather than around a training pledge — and why the engines behind it are checked daily against the tier they are supposed to run on, since a provider can quietly move a model to one that keeps prompts.

Asked before you asked

How do I stop ChatGPT from training on my chats?

There is a data-controls setting that disables it. It applies going forward, not to anything you already sent, and it does not stop the conversation being stored against your account.

Do paid tiers train on your data?

Business and enterprise tiers usually do not, and that is often the actual reason to buy one. Consumer paid tiers vary — paying does not automatically change the training posture.

Does nokeep train on anything I type?

No, and there is nothing to train on: conversations are held in memory to answer you and then dropped, with no account for them to attach to and a no-retention agreement covering every engine.
