What is zero data retention?
Zero data retention usually means specified request content is not retained after processing under the provider’s applicable terms. The exact scope matters: operational records, unsupported features, and storage by the application may be handled separately.

Define exactly what the promise covers
Ask which model, endpoint, and features are covered; what counts as request content; when processing ends; and whether exceptions apply. A general statement that a provider supports zero retention does not prove every request uses it.
The chat application also has its own behavior. A no-retention model provider does not prevent the application from saving history for its users. Evaluate the application and provider together.
Retention, training, and encryption
Retention concerns what persists. A training policy concerns one possible use of information. Encryption controls access to data in transit or at rest. These protections can complement one another, but their names are not interchangeable.
No-training does not necessarily imply retained content, either: a service can offer both no training and no retention. Read both commitments rather than assuming one contradicts or proves the other.
What can still exist?
Billing, authentication, reliability, and abuse-prevention systems can use operational metadata even when prompt content is not retained. Your own browser history, exports, backups, and screenshots are additional copies outside the inference provider’s promise.
Processing itself is distinct from storage. A conventional hosted model must receive the content needed for an answer. Zero retention alone is not a claim of end-to-end encryption or offline processing.
How to evaluate nokeep
nokeep keeps no server copy of saved chat history and uses model requests under no-retention agreements. The current privacy policy explains local storage, model processing, operational records, and payments.
Its provider, Venice, distinguishes model privacy modes. The Private mode is documented as contract-enforced zero retention for prompt and response content; its other modes provide different protections. Do not infer nokeep’s behavior from every feature the provider offers.

Can the model receive my prompt with zero retention?
Yes. Processing and retaining content are different. Conventional hosted inference needs the prompt to generate an answer.
Does zero retention mean no billing records?
Not necessarily. Operational metadata may be retained separately from prompt and response content.
Can I verify zero retention by opening another browser?
No. That may show whether history is synchronized, but it cannot prove what a server retains. Provider terms and implementation evidence are also needed.
