Can AI chats be used in court?
Yes. AI conversations are ordinary business records: if a company stores them, they can be subpoenaed, preserved by court order, and entered as evidence — and this has already happened, including a preservation order that required chats to be retained even after users deleted them.
People assume a chat with an AI is like a thought — transient, and theirs. Legally it is closer to an email. It sits on a company's servers, attached to an account, and the company decides nothing about whether it must be produced. A court does.
What has already happened
A preservation order in litigation against a major AI company required conversations to be retained — including ones users had deleted — because a party to a lawsuit cannot destroy evidence while a claim is live. Deleting from your side does not delete from theirs.
Thousands of conversations that users chose to "share" via link were indexed by search engines and became publicly readable, which is a reminder that the sharing controls in these products are not always understood by the people using them.
Chat logs have been shown at trial, and AI companies have begun matching advertising against what users discussed. Once a record exists, its uses multiply beyond whatever you imagined when you typed.
What actually protects you
Not deletion, and not a retention policy. A record you can request the deletion of is still a record today, and a thirty-day window is thirty days of exposure.
The only durable protection is that the record never exists. That means no account to attach it to, no history stored after the answer is sent, and a provider contractually bound not to retain the prompt. Then a subpoena arrives and there is nothing responsive to produce — which is a materially different position from having something and being asked for it.
This is the whole design of nokeep: your conversation is held in memory long enough to answer and then dropped, there is no account it could be filed under, and every engine runs under a no-retention agreement.

Can deleted AI chats be recovered?
Often yes. Deletion on your screen usually removes your access, not the copy on the provider's systems, and a legal hold can require them to keep it regardless of what you pressed.
Are AI chats protected like conversations with a lawyer or doctor?
No. Privilege attaches to specific professional relationships. Typing something to a chatbot creates no privilege at all, and the company holding it is generally free — and sometimes required — to produce it.
Does using a VPN help?
It hides which network you came from. It does not touch the account you signed into or the conversation stored against it, which is where the exposure actually is.
