Characters

Every character has a page: who they are, where your story starts, and your stories and pictures with them. Characters and their stories are saved in this browser.

Where do I find characters?

In the sidebar, choose Characters. A character in the spotlight plays at the top; below it are rows to scroll sideways: Pick up where you left off, Most started this week, then the cast by where they come from, and Yours.

Filter with All, Anime, Games, Comics & TV or Yours, or search by name. Press any character to open their page, or press Surprise call to ring someone at random.

What is on a character’s page?

Everything is on one page. Once you have played them, Your stories comes first, with your latest story and its Continue, then Pictures from your stories and calls. Where it could start shows the places a new story can begin, and About shows who they are, their voice and a few lines they might say.

How do I make my own character?

  1. In Characters, press Make your own. This opens /characters/new.
  2. Describe who is on your mind in a line and press Make them.
  3. Their page opens and fills in as the co-writer writes who they are, draws a picture and finds a voice.
  4. When they feel right, press Start the story.

The character is saved on this device. Writing help sends your draft to the model to answer.

How do I edit a character I made?

Your own characters are edited right on their page, and every change is saved as you go.

  1. Open their page.
  2. Press Edit on Who they are or How they look and rewrite it, or use the pencil next to their name to change the name and their one line.
  3. To change anything in words, type it in the box under Change anything about them, like funnier or red hair, and press Change.
  4. For the picture, press Picture: pick a style, draw 4 more (each image: 50 credits, or one of your free images), or Upload a JPG, PNG or WebP under 10 MB. Bring to life makes a moving portrait and shows its price in credits.
  5. For the voice, press Voice and try the voices that fit.

How do I set up who I am?

Your own page, at /characters/you, is who you are in stories: your name, how characters should refer to you, and a picture of you. From Characters, open it from You, or press Make yourself if you have not made it yet.

With a picture, you appear in the scenes drawn in your stories. Pick who you play under Who you are on a character’s page.

How do I call a character?

Calls are in beta. They work hands-free: talk, pause, and the character answers out loud.

  1. Open a character’s page and press Call, then pick where it starts and who you are, and press Call again. Each call is a new one, and it remembers your latest story with them.
  2. Allow the microphone when the browser asks. The line rings until it is listening.
  3. Talk naturally. Speaking while they talk interrupts them, like on a phone.
  4. Ask for a photo and they may send a selfie, which uses your free images or credits.
  5. Hang up with End. The whole call stays in the chat as text.

What you say is sent to be transcribed and answered, and is not kept. Headphones help in a noisy room.

How do I get pictures in a character chat?

In a character chat the Image and Video modes are locked. Pictures come from the Images switch in the chat header instead, and each one is also kept under Pictures on the character’s page.

  1. Make sure the character has a portrait or reference image.
  2. Turn on Images in the chat header.
  3. Keep chatting. Scenes use your free images or credits.

How do I delete a character or a story?

  1. To delete a character you made, open their page, press More next to Picture and Voice, and choose Delete with their name.
  2. Choose whether to also delete your stories with them, then press Delete. They are removed from this device for good.
  3. To delete one story, open Your stories on the character’s page and press Delete story on it.

Common questions

Do characters remember me?

Each story keeps its own conversation, and a call remembers your latest story with that character. Character chats are kept out of your personal memory. See Memory.

Do characters have their own voices?

Yes. Each character has a voice of their own, picked when they are made and changeable from Voice on their page. Read aloud and calls both use it.

What do calls cost?

Free accounts get about 10 free call minutes a day, shared with read aloud. With credits, a call costs about 50 credits a minute; a quiet one costs less. Plans don’t include calls; they use your credits. During a call you see what it has used, one warning comes when about 2 minutes are left, and when the time runs out the call is saved in the chat so you can keep chatting in text.

Why is my character missing on another device?

Characters and stories stay on the device that made them. Use Backup and restore to move them.
