Are temporary AI chats private?
Partly. ChatGPT’s Temporary Chat, Gemini’s temporary chats and Claude’s incognito chats stay out of your history and are not used for training, but each company still keeps a copy for a while: up to 30 days at OpenAI, 72 hours at Google and 30 days by default at Anthropic. And because you are signed in, the chat is still linked to your account during that time.

What a temporary chat does
It keeps the conversation out of your chat history and your saved memory, so it will not show up in your sidebar or shape later answers. All three companies say temporary or incognito chats are not used to train their models.
That protects you from someone looking at your screen or your history later. It does not make the conversation disappear from the company’s servers straight away.
How long each one is kept
ChatGPT Temporary Chat: OpenAI says it may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety, and may review it to monitor abuse. Saving a temporary chat turns it into a regular one.
Gemini temporary chats: Google says they are kept for up to 72 hours so Gemini can respond and Google can protect its services, and that human reviewers may be involved in that safety work.
Claude incognito chats: Anthropic says they are not saved to your history or memory and are excluded from training even if you allow training elsewhere, and are retained for 30 days by default.
What a temporary chat does not hide
You are still signed in. During the retention window the conversation sits with an account that carries your email, often a phone number and payment details, and your IP address. Temporary hides the chat from your history, not from the company.
On a work or school account, an administrator’s retention rules can apply even to temporary chats. Treat them as tidier, not anonymous.
A chat with no account at all
