A profile for the person in the scene

Characters is a new way to return to a role without pasting the same brief every time. Each profile is kept in this browser and gives a conversation a name, a voice, and a starting point. It is a personal shelf for the characters you make, not a public marketplace or a community feed.

The required fields are a name and persona. The persona is where you describe who the character is, how they speak, what they want, and what they never do. You can add a short tagline, a face emoji or letter, an appearance description, and an optional greeting. The greeting becomes the first line in the new conversation before you type anything.

  • Name and persona are required to save a profile.
  • One line, appearance, face, and greeting are optional choices for the card and opening scene.

Give your character a face

A portrait is optional. Choose Draw portrait and nokeep turns the appearance description, or the beginning of the persona when no appearance is supplied, into a square image. The portrait is kept on this device and shown on the character card and in the conversation header.

Drawing a portrait counts toward your image allowance, currently two free images a day. The pricing page lists credits and plans for more use. You can remove a portrait or draw it again before saving.

  • A portrait does not make a character public or create a cloud profile.
  • It is separate from the text persona and can be removed or redrawn.
  • Image requests still go through hosted inference while the resulting portrait is kept locally.

Start a fresh conversation in three steps

Open nokeep Chat and use the Rooms navigation. Choose Characters, select New character, fill in the name and persona, then save. On the character card, choose Chat with the character. nokeep creates a new conversation with that profile and shows its greeting, if you wrote one.

The character persona is supplied with character turns so the model can speak from it. Character chats are focused conversations: the normal roleplay transcript remains available, while workbench tools and web research are not used for those turns. The model can still miss a detail, so keep a short scene note when continuity matters.

Local by design, with practical limits

Character definitions and portraits are saved in this browser. They do not automatically appear on another device. When you send a message, a hosted model receives the character’s name, persona, and relevant conversation context to generate the reply.

There is no automatic Character.AI account, character-card, or chat-history importer. Bring a brief or scene summary you own or have permission to use. Editing changes the saved profile. Deleting removes the profile and its portrait, while existing conversation transcripts remain in chat history. Character profiles are separate from the current chat backup, so keep a separate copy of definitions and export conversations you want to preserve.
