How do I delete my ChatGPT history?

One conversation: hover it in the sidebar, open the menu, choose Delete.

All of them: Settings → General → Delete all chats. This clears the sidebar and cannot be undone from your side.

Stop future training use: Settings → Data controls → turn off model improvement. This applies going forward only.

Delete the account entirely: Settings → Data controls → Delete account. This is the only step that removes the identity the rest is attached to.

Deleted conversations typically persist on the provider’s systems for a retention window — around thirty days is common — and longer where safety review or a legal hold applies. A preservation order in ongoing litigation has already required conversations to be kept despite user deletion.

Anything already used in training is not retrievable from a model. Turning the setting off stops the next contribution, not the last one.

And the account remains, which is the durable part: a record that you are a user, when you used it, and what you paid.

All of the above is housekeeping on a record that keeps regenerating. The alternative shape is not a better delete button but no record to delete — no account, and conversations that end with the tab. That is what nokeep is, and the cost is that there is no history to come back to.
