Is it safe to share personal information with AI?
With a mainstream assistant, treat anything you type as something you have written down on a company’s servers under your name — because that is what it is. The safe assumption is that it can be read, retained, produced in litigation, or exposed in a breach.
A working rule
Before typing something sensitive, ask whether you would put it in an email to a stranger at that company. That is roughly the exposure, and it is the right calibration for most people.
The category that catches people out is not obvious secrets. It is the ordinary context that makes an answer useful — your diagnosis, your employer, your address, your child’s school — supplied naturally and stored permanently.
What changes the answer
No account. Without one, information cannot be filed against an identity even if it is briefly processed, which is the difference between a record about you and a fragment about nobody.
No retention. If the text is dropped once the answer is sent, there is nothing to breach or produce later.

What is still worth withholding
Credentials, card numbers and government identifiers have no legitimate use in a prompt. No privacy posture makes typing them sensible, here included.

Can I share medical details with an AI?
The information is usually what makes the answer useful, so the question is where it lands. On an account-based assistant it becomes part of a stored profile; on a no-account service with no retention it does not persist at all.
What happens if there is a data breach?
Whatever was stored is exposed. A service holding nothing has nothing to leak, which is the only breach protection that does not depend on someone else’s security being perfect.
Should I use fake details instead?
It works, and it degrades the answer. The better fix is a service where the real details do not create a record.
